Unsurprising revelation

Saturday 14th January

Well it surprises me not-at-all that they’re making a movie of ‘The Da Vinci Code’. I only read the book fairly recently but the fairly predictable, blockbustery style of writing just screamed movie, I thought. I had great expectations for the book actually given the number of people who have raved about it, but I found that I kept having to remind myself that it was sold, under no pretences, as a bestseller, easy to read kind of thing, rather than as an inspirational piece of storytelling :) so, after clarifying that I actually rated it as quite good…

I’m not so sure about the movie conversion of ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ due to the large proportion of Chinese hollywood actors cast to play Japanese (i.e. people will recognize them as generic Asians), but then again it’s no different from Americans, or English, playing French, German etc. is it, I suppose. Anyway I haven’t made up my mind about going to see it yet due to the fact I hold the book in such high esteem. We shall see.

Agreed about the Da Vinci Code if you take it as nothing too heavy it was alright. And you can well imagine the film, Tom Hanks innit. I don’t know if i’ll be rushing to go and see it though.

I will be going to see A Scanner Darkly though – really getting into the book, quite heavy going though. All sorts of details of the neurology of the fake drug. The trailer looks awesome to the fucking max man!

No thoughts on Memoirs, the book is good you say?

‘Memoirs’ was pretty good, but i guess films never quite live up to your expectations when you’ve read the book… and to be fair, i’ve heard the book isn’t a particularly accurate portrayal of Geisha life. I’d give the film 4/5, and say i was pleasently suprised.

yeah man memoirs was awesome – loved it. you’re welcome to borrow my copy if you like, once loz has finished with it, and of course if we’re not, er, breaching copyright through book sharing, or some shit like that..? *cough* :)
